There are places where history is part of the scenery. And then there are those where it literally appears beneath your feet.
That is precisely what happened during the renovation of
Gran Hotel Barcino 4*S, right in the heart of Barcelona's Gothic Quarter. What started as a renewal project ended up becoming one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the city in recent years. And today, that discovery is part of the hotel experience.
An unexpected discovery right in the historic center
During the works carried out in the adjacent Casa Requesens, monumental remains of the ancient Roman forum of Barcino were uncovered, preserved in exceptional condition.
The find, located on a Montjuïc stone pavement dating back to the end of the 1st century BC, stands out not only for its archaeological value. It has also allowed part of the original layout of the ancient Roman city to be reinterpreted, changing the historical understanding of the center of Barcino that existed until now.
Far from modifying the project to hide the remains, Gargallo Hotels decided to integrate them into the hotel itself, adapting the entire renovation to preserve and highlight the archaeological space.
Today, guests and visitors can explore a small museum integrated within the establishment, where Roman remains, medieval structures, and contemporary architecture coexist right in the center of Barcelona.
Much more than a stay in the Gothic Quarter
Gran Hotel Barcino has always had a very special connection with its surroundings. But following this renovation, the hotel goes a step further and becomes a space where history is a real part of the experience.
The Deluxe rooms preserve original architectural features that bring a lot of character to the rooms, with stone walls or Gothic windows and a much more intimate atmosphere linked to the essence of the building.
And if there is one room that especially represents that connection with history, it is Gran Barcino. Located in a structure dating back to the 14th century, this room preserves a spectacular original Gothic window, ancient stone walls, and architectural details that make the experience feel completely different from that of a conventional hotel.
Here, it is not just about sleeping in the center of Barcelona. It is about staying inside a piece of its history.
Vestalis Cocktail Bar: a new look at Barcino's past
Inside the hotel itself, you will also find
Vestalis Cocktail Bar, an intimate space inspired by ancient Roman Barcino and the vestal priestesses who guarded the sacred fire.
The concept blends signature cocktails, a carefully selected choice of whiskeys, small bites, and an elegant, quiet atmosphere that perfectly fits the historical character of the building.
All of this is surrounded by an environment where the past remains present underground, making the experience much more immersive and hard to find anywhere else in the city.
A hotel designed to experience Barcelona differently
In a city with so many hotels, Gran Hotel Barcino focuses on something that is increasingly hard to find: personality.
History, architecture, heritage, and contemporary hospitality coexist here in a very natural way, allowing you to discover a much more authentic, leisurely Barcelona that is connected to its origins.
