Alquézar
Alquézar is a beautiful medieval village considered one of “The Most Beautiful Villages in Spain”. It is located in Somontano region, in the heart of the Pyrenees and at the gates of the Parque Natural de la Sierra and the Cañones de Guara. The village is surrounded by olive trees, almond trees and vineyards.
The village boasts an excellently preserved historic centre and buildings of traditional popular architecture. It still retains much of its wall and its towers, and it features the only cloister in all of Aragon with four panels decorated with paintings.
Aínsa
This village is located at the gates of the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park. It is the capital of the historic County of Sobrarbe and the birthplace of the Kingdom of Aragon.
The castle, the church with its crypt and cloister, the arcaded square, the Jewish baths, and the stone houses with slate roofs will transport you back in time. Aínsa is an ideal destination for all tastes and any time of the year.
Jaca
Jaca was the first capital of Aragon. Its imposing Romanesque cathedral rivals Santiago de Compostela’s in age.
During your visit, you must not miss the Diocesan Museum, considered one of the best Romanesque art museum in Europe, and the impressive Citadel, also known as the Castle of San Pedro, one of the best-preserved in our continent, testifying to Jaca’s historical military significance.
Church of Santiago Agüero
It is a jewel of 12the-century Romanesque architecture and one of the most curious and enigmatic monuments of Alto Aragon. Hidden among plants and perched on a hill just 2 kilometers form the village of Agüero, it remains a mystery.
The story behind its construction and the reason for its hurried completion are nuclear, with various theories existing. These hypotheses are further fueled by numerous small details, curiosities and signs found on the walls of this temple.
Castillo de Loarre
With over 1,000 years of history, the Castle of Loarre has been considered National Monument since 1906 and is regarded as the best Romanesque castle in the world. Its walls, towers, battlements, and arrow-slits windows will transport you to an era of medieval battles.
Inside the fortress, you will be amazed by the majesty of the Church of San Pedro, whose dome, at that time, had no equal in the entire Iberian Peninsula.
Built at an altitude of over 1,000 meters at the foothills of the Pyrenean mountains, the castle offers breathtaking views from any of its towers.
Monasterio viejo de San Juan de la Peña
It is one of the most important Romanesque monasteries in Spain and is considered the cradle of the Kingdom of Aragon. Its location is one of its greatest attractions, as it is built sheltered by the forest and embedded beneath the rock of the mountain.
Its cloister houses one of the finest collections of historiated capitals in Spanish Romanesque art.
Estación internacional de Canfranc
It is a majestic structure nestled among the mountains just meters from the border with France. At the time of its inauguration in 1928, the station was the second largest in Europe.
The vastness of the building is matched by the numerous stories and mysteries held within its walls. During World War II, this station witnessed the passage of tons of looted gold from Europe, tungsten destined for Nazi war machinery, as well as Jewish refugees, Allied spies, and members of the Gestapo.
