The Hotel Colonial stands as the first building constructed on Via Laietana, at number 3, marking a milestone in Barcelona’s urban history. Its original design was the work of the renowned architect Enric Sagnier, in collaboration with municipal architect Pere Falqués, blending Modernist influences with early 20th-century office architecture. The result reflects the innovation and elegance of the era through imposing façades, large windows, and thoughtfully designed ventilation for comfort.

A fascinating financial past

For decades, the building served as the headquarters of Banco Hispano Colonial, founded in 1876 by the Marqués de Comillas and other bankers, playing a key role in trade and investment between Spain and its colonies in the Americas and Asia. The bank was also one of the drivers behind the opening of Via Laietana, an ambitious project connecting the port with the Eixample and transforming Barcelona’s old town.

Transformation and preservation

In 2006, Gargallo Hotels acquired the former bank building and transformed it into a 4-star hotel, respecting its historic and noble character. Listed as a historic building by the Barcelona City Council, the original façade, high ceilings, noble materials, and bright spaces were preserved, combining architectural heritage with modern comfort and contemporary design.
